I Secret‑Shopped Spiritual Practitioners — Here’s What I Found

Over the years, I’ve hired multiple spiritual practitioners — some for my own needs, and others as a kind of “secret shopper” to understand how different workers operate behind the scenes. What I discovered was both disappointing and eye‑opening. Three separate practitioners tried to manipulate me financially by adding extra services after I had already paid for one. In some cases, they conveniently “forgot” an important part of the service, only to offer it later as an additional, higher‑priced add‑on. It felt less like spiritual work and more like a setup — a way to inflate prices by creating problems just to sell the solution.

I also encountered a practitioner who procrastinated for weeks, barely communicated, and still charged premium rates despite delivering no real results.

That experience taught me something important: sometimes the scam isn’t dramatic or obvious. Sometimes it’s laziness, lack of integrity, and taking advantage of clients who trust you to follow through.

These situations didn’t break my faith in spirituality, but they did sharpen my discernment. They showed me how easily people can be taken advantage of when they’re seeking clarity, healing, or hope. And that’s why I’m sharing this — not to attack anyone, but to help others recognize the red flags I had to learn the hard way.

Potential Red Flags To Watch For:

1. Upselling After You’ve Already Paid

If you pay for one service and suddenly the practitioner “discovers” something urgent that requires more money, that’s manipulation. Real practitioners don’t create emergencies to increase their income.

2. Leaving Out Key Steps to Charge More Later

This one shocked me. Some practitioners intentionally omit an important part of the work so they can charge extra to “finish” what they should’ve done in the first place. That’s not spirituality — that’s strategy.

3. Fear‑Based Tactics

Any practitioner who tries to scare you into buying more services is not working in integrity. “If you don’t do this, something bad will happen” is a classic scammer script.

4. Procrastination + Premium Pricing

One of the most frustrating experiences I had was with a practitioner who charged high prices but dragged their feet for weeks. No communication. No updates. No results. Laziness becomes a scam when someone takes your money and doesn’t deliver.

5. Guaranteed Results

No real spiritual worker guarantees outcomes. Energy work isn’t a vending machine. Anyone promising 100% success is selling fantasy, not spirituality.

6. Pressure to Buy Multiple Services at Once

If someone tries to stack services on you before you’ve even seen the results of the first one, that’s a sign they’re more focused on your wallet than your wellbeing.

These red flags aren’t always obvious when you’re vulnerable, hurting, or looking for guidance. But once you know what to look for, you can protect yourself — and your money — with confidence.

One thing I want to make very clear is this: falling for a spiritual scammer does not mean you’re weak, naive, or “not spiritually advanced enough.” People fall for scammers because they’re human — because they’re hurting, searching, or hoping for clarity. Scammers know this. They target people who are emotionally open, overwhelmed, or desperate for answers.

I’ve been there myself. When you’re looking for guidance, you want to believe the person you’re paying has your best interest at heart. You want to trust that they’re doing the work they promised. You want to feel like you’re investing in your healing, not wasting your money.

Scammers take advantage of that hope. They use urgency, fear, and spiritual language to make you feel like you need them. They position themselves as the only one who can fix your situation. And when you’re vulnerable, that can feel convincing.

But here’s the truth: Being vulnerable is not a flaw. It’s a human experience.   And scammers exploit that — not because you’re weak, but because they lack integrity.

Recognizing this doesn’t just protect your wallet. It protects your spirit, your confidence, and your trust in your own intuition.

My experiences taught me that not everyone who calls themselves a spiritual practitioner is operating with honesty or integrity. Some people are genuinely gifted and committed to helping others, and some people are simply looking for a quick payout. The problem is that when you’re seeking guidance, clarity, or healing, it can be hard to tell the difference in the moment.

That’s why I share my story — not to create fear, but to create awareness. You deserve to feel safe when you’re investing in your spiritual journey. You deserve transparency, respect, and real effort from anyone you choose to work with. And you deserve to trust your intuition without being manipulated or pressured into spending more than you intended.

At the end of the day, your spiritual path is yours. No practitioner should ever make you feel scared, rushed, or dependent on them. The more you learn to recognize the red flags, the easier it becomes to protect your energy, your wallet, and your peace.
