How Hoodoo Shaped The Beginning of My Spiritual Journey

Hoodoo is a deeply rooted African American folk tradition built on ancestral wisdom, lived experience, and the power of working with the natural world. It’s a practice shaped by survival, resilience, and spiritual strength — not by formal initiation or rigid doctrine. Hoodoo blends herbs, roots, candles, prayers, and personal intention to create real‑world change, protection, healing, and justice.

At its core, Hoodoo is about connection: to your ancestors, to your spirit, to the land, and to the forces that walk with you. It’s a tradition that honors practicality and results, teaching you how to use what you have, trust your intuition, and stand in your own power. Whether you’re working with candles, roots, petitions, or spiritual baths, Hoodoo is a living practice that grows with you and responds to your needs.

When I first began my spiritual journey, I built a strong foundation in Hoodoo because I wasn’t sure how deep or how dark I wanted to go into the more intense sides of spirituality. Hoodoo has definitely taught me discipline, patience, and resilience. It’s not a practice where results appear instantly or where you can rush the process. Working with roots, candles, prayers, and petitions requires consistency and intention — you have to show up for the work, even on days when you don’t feel like it. There were plenty of days when I felt discouraged or burned out and didn't want to perform. Its okay to take breaks when you feel a spiritual or energetic burnout, but its best to keep the momentum especially if the spell prescribes or calls for multiple days of candle work.

Hoodoo taught me to slow down, pay attention to signs, and trust divine timing instead of forcing outcomes. It also strengthened my resilience, because every ritual, every cleansing, and every protection working reminded me that I have the power to shift my circumstances, no matter what I’m facing. Those lessons stayed with me as I moved into other traditions, and they continue to shape the way I approach magick today.

Hoodoo felt familiar, grounded, and safe — a tradition rooted in protection, prayer, and the wisdom of our ancestors. In the beginning, I kept my work on the lighter side by incorporating the Bible into my spellwork, especially the Psalms, which many practitioners consider a powerful spellbook on its own. When I left religion, I thought I would never use a bible again and I was wrong. Using scripture alongside roots, candles, and intention, helped me ease into my path while still honoring the spiritual practices I grew up around. That foundation eventually gave me the confidence to explore deeper systems, experiment with different traditions, and discover the parts of magick that resonated with me the most.

Hoodoo will always be the foundation of my spiritual path. No matter how far I travel into other systems, the grounding, protection, and ancestral connection I learned through Hoodoo continue to guide me. It’s the tradition that taught me how to stand in my power, trust my intuition, and honor the wisdom of those who came before me.
